Cecabank joins as a founding member of RL1, and stregthens its position in European digital asset infrastructures

Cecabank takes a new step in its digital asset strategy by joining as a founding member of Regulated Layer One (RL1). A layer-1 blockchain infrastructure, powered by European financial institutions to make it easier for institutional clients to develop services in digital asset financial markets

The bank becomes the first Spanish bank to participate in this pan-European iniciative, designed to respond to the needs of institutional financial markets under the highest standards of governance, operational resilience and regulatory compliance

Joining RL1 reinforces Cecabank's commitment to building European financial infrastructures and consolidates its role as a strategic partner for financial institutions seeking to access the digital asset ecosystem efficiently and securely

Cecabank has joined as founding member of Regulated Layer One (RL1), a Luxemburg-based limited European cooperative society that provides a layer-1 blockchain infrastructure, neutral, permissible and governed by the participating financial insitutions themselves to drive the digitalization of the European capital markets.

RL1 is a distributed ledger technology (DLT) infrastructure designed specifically for financial institutions and developed with a full focus on regulatory compliance, operational security and interoperability. Based on technology compatible with Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), the platform combines a European cooperative governance with an architecture adapted to the requirements of regulated markets and aligned with various initiatives promoted by the European Central Bank for the development of digital finance.

The infrastructure is part of an already operational network, with more than 50 participants and transactions processed for an amount exceeding 700 million euros. Use cases linked, among others, to the issuance and management of digital bonds, tokenized funds, tokenization of real assets, collateral management in real time, securities lending and processes associated with the life cycle of digital financial instruments may be developed.

Participation in RL1 constitutes for Cecabank a strategic initiative that will allow it to contribute from an early stage to the definition of the standards of governance and operation of a pan-European infrastructure called to play an important role in the evolution of digital financial markets. It also facilitates early access to new technological capabilities and strengthens collaboration with some of the main European financial institutions in areas related to asset tokenization, interoperability between infrastructures and the application of DLT technologies to capital markets.

Joining RL1 also reinforces Cecabank's position as a specialist service provider for financial institutions in the field of digital assets. Thanks to its participation in the cooperative, the entity will be able to act as an access point for other institutions interested in operating on this infrastructure, facilitating their connection to an international reference ecosystem without the need for them to be directly integrated into the cooperative society.

Gema Rodríguez, Director of Strategy and Corporate Development at Cecabank, said: "The incorporation of Cecabank as a founding member of RL1 allows Cecabank to participate from the beginning in an initiative promoted by European financial institutions, contributing to the definition of common standards and the development of a secure digital asset ecosystem, designed from the ground up to meet regulatory requirements, interoperable and aligned with the needs of our customers."

Through this alliance, Cecabank contributes to preserving European sovereignty and continues to advance its strategy of innovation and digital transformation by expanding the capabilities it makes available to its clients to operate in the field of digital assets and consolidating its position as one of the main actors of the institutional ecosystem of digital assets in Spain and Europe.
