The Statement includes the signatures of some of the world's leading companies, together with hundreds of companies of all sizes and sectors that are members of the United Nations Global Compact, the world's largest corporate sustainability initiative. On a national scale, 183 of the companies signing the statement, 17% of the total, are Spanish, making Spain the leading country in terms of CEOs embracing the statement. Among the Spanish businesses represented, 10 are companies listed on the Ibex 35 that jointly represent a capital figure of 257.9 billion euros. These are: Acciona, ACS, BBVA, CaixaBank, Cellnex, Iberdrola, Inditex, Mapfre, Santander and Telefónica.

The manifesto of support -including the full list of signing CEOs- was presented to the United Nations Secretary General, António Guterres, by Sanda Ojiambo, Executive Director at United Nations Global Compact, at the opening of the Private Sector Forum, an event held in parallel to the high-level meeting of the General Assembly to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the United Nations.

"The Declaration is a resounding act of support for inclusive multilateralism. In no uncertain terms, it states that cooperation must cut across borders, sectors and generations so that we can adapt to changing circumstances", stated Sanda Ojiambo. "In the space of just one month since we launched the Declaration, we have managed to collect more than 1,000 signatures from CEOs of companies of all sizes and from virtually every industry and region. We deeply appreciate their commitment to global cooperation at a crucial time for the United Nations and the world at large".

The launch of the Declaration comes at a time of unprecedented global disruption and transformation, coinciding with the 75th anniversary of the United Nations, and serves as a stark reminder that international cooperation must mobilise across borders, sectors and generations to adapt to changing circumstances. In it, CEOs assert that they acknowledge that "peace, justice and strong institutions are beneficial to the long-term viability of our organisations and are fundamental in upholding the Ten Principles of the United Nations Global Compact and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Now is our opportunity to learn from our collective experiences to realign ourselves in accordance with the mission of the United Nations and steer our world towards a more equitable, inclusive and sustainable path. We are in this together and we are in the business of a better world".

The CEO Statement also supports the objectives of Sustainable Development Goal 16: to promote peace, justice and strong institutions. Key issues for the future of business according to a June-July study conducted through the United Nations Global Compact Action Platform on SDG 16, which includes interviews with 60 senior executives, revealed that, alongside environmental and social issues, business leaders believe good governance lies at the heart of good business.
